The importance of tempo and resistance with weight training

One of the most overlooked aspect of a rep while resistance training is tempo. The fact is tempo is where resistance comes in. The definition of resistance is, “effort made to stop or to fight against someone or something”. In this case, we are fighting gravity with our bodies while the weight gets back to the starting point.

Not every movement you do in the gym will be a “pump” move (which is usually faster and sometimes with a shorter range of motion).

Although there are times in training where going for the “pump” is beneficial for growth, the main movements, perhaps the bulk of the program, is geared towards stressing the muscle tissue and overloading it with moderate to heavy weight.

How do you stress it?

Slow the negative down. Concentrics should always be strong and fast. Finishing a set isn’t a race.
