Finding your WHY
We talk a lot on this page about finding the reason WHY you want to transform your physique as being the most important driving force for achieving it.
Well, a couple weekends ago I attended a conference where one of the presenters talked about a technique called the “Five Whys” and I thought it was brilliant. In short, you ask yourself why you want to do something, and upon coming up with the answer you ask yourself “why” up to four more times until you reach the singular most important factor that is driving your change.

For example:
Why do I want to lose fat?
– Because I want to look better.
Why do I want to look better?
– Because I want to improve my self esteem.
Why do I want to improve my self esteem?
– Because I want to be a good role model for my daughter by having a healthy relationship with both food and my body.
Why do I want to be a good role model for my daughter in this regard?
– Because I love her and want her to grow up with a healthy perception of her own body and a healthy relationship with food.

So in the beginning, a goal that seemed motivated only by something superficial and self serving, turned out to be about something much more and powerful. When you find your WHY you will find your motivation. Take a few minutes and contemplate the answers if you need to. It is the deeper WHY that will fuel your motivation when your fluctuating moods and desires don’t.
