Does Corrective Exercise Matter?
The fitness industry has done a wonderful job of creating a whole niche market out of postural assessment and corrective exercises.
The truth is, however, that pretty much anyone you’ll ever meet will have poor posture and that this is largely not indicative of their risk for injury.
If I were to assess anyone with the intent of finding something wrong I’d likely be able to come up with a whole laundry list of things that need to be “corrected”.
And while I do believe there is a time and place for corrective exercise, it is easy to get derailed to the point where everything you’re doing in the gym is no longer leading you towards the goal you initially intended.
If you’re aiming to improve your physique, take care of your body, but don’t neglect the reason you started training in the first place.
After all, I’ve never seen a man go up to a woman and say “Hey baby, nice scapular positioning. Can I buy you dinner?”
