Criticizing Physiques Of Others

I find this ‘logic’ interesting.

Whenever there is a picture of a lean and muscular female (and we’re not even talking really well developed female bodybuilders; rather, a figure girl or even a non-competitor who is lean enough to have good muscle definition, some development, maybe a little vascularity, etc.), there invariably is another female(s) who feel the need to make some kind of disparaging and in some cases remarkably rude comment; a comment I might had that would NEVER be said to a person’s face.

1. It’s interesting that nearly without fail, this comes from out-of-shape females. Of course, it is not just females that make these comments. Men do as well, and personally I think many men are insecure and feel “threatened” by women in better shape than them. Again, no one has to be “attracted” to people who are in great shape, but this isn’t Hot or Not. That is not the point. But it’s interesting that in-shape people never make such remarks.

2. A comment like, “she needs to live a little.” Hmmm, so the conclusion drawn is that because she is lean and muscular, achieving goals she has set out for herself, she isn’t ‘living a little’ or enjoying her life (I’m sure for some of the obsessed competitors in our industry this is certainly true, but the simple shape one’s body is in doesn’t offer any insight into whether a person is “living a little”). In fact I am pretty sure that their successful efforts to achieve goals makes them pretty darn happy.

So I suppose then, that ‘living a little’ means carrying more fat, not putting any effort into being in shape (even if it makes you happy), eating more cheeseburgers and cake. (Wait! There’s another assumption there – the person in shape only eats orange roughy and asparagus … ok).

3. And the oddest one – “She looks like a man; why would anyone want to look like a man?” First off, let’s just ignore the fact that men and women have the same muscles and underneath all that body fat, and outside of size differences, look the same.

Ok so, “she looks like a man; why would any female want to look like a man?” Really? This statement implies that it is men who look muscular and carry low enough body fat to have highly visible muscle and muscular definition. In what country? Last I checked the large majority of men are NOT lean and muscular; very, VERY far from it. So what ‘man’ is really being referenced in comments like this? Heck, the average man in the gym TRYING to become lean and muscular … is not. So this statement is pretty stupid.

Not to mention, let’s also add that this statement is implying that a lean and muscular female looks like a man and therefore ‘real women’ should not be lean and muscular. So then a ‘real woman’ should look what? Soft? Chubby? Not muscular, etc? OK. And anyone who does not fit YOUR mold of “real woman” is not a real woman? Makes sense, er, not really.

Isn’t that what the average MAN looks like these days? So then by this silly logic, doesn’t the average man therefore look like how a … woman is ‘supposed to’ look? So these same insecure, out-of-shape females making these disparaging comments to lean and muscular females should similarly apply the same logic to out-of-shape males; “why would a man want to be soft, out-of-shape and not muscular … like us women are supposed to be? Hey man, you look like a woman!”

Understand what page you’re on before you post disparaging comments about the bodies of people you don’t know who will also be reading your comments by the way. What I mean is, act like an adult, not a little child. Would you be ok with your kids talking like this to other people? If so, you’re pretty much an awful parent and example to your kids. How about other kids making fun of your kid? For doing something they love I might add. This is a fitness page where lean and muscular photos of LBC clients are a regular occurrence. You don’t need to LIKE any of it; everyone has tastes of their own, but these pictures are not posted to find out if you LIKE the pictures or find them sexually desirable. The purpose of the pictures is to highlight the achievements and progress of people trying to achieve and progress in their own fitness journeys.

Grow up.
