Good Foods, Bad Foods, and Dietary Freedom

We often tell our clients that if they’re going to deviate from their plan to simply focus on being mindful of the overall quantity they consume.

In other words, if you’ve decided to be off plan, enjoy it but moderate your portions to a reasonable amount.

What I’ve discovered though, is that this seems to be most difficult for those with a good food/bad food mindset. If you’re always fixated on not eating the “bad” foods, when the moment comes to deviate from the plan your feeling of deprivation makes you prone to binging (usually followed by incredible guilt about the quantity you consumed).

Instead, we don’t have good or bad foods per se, but just acknowledge that some foods are meant to be eaten less frequently and in smaller quantities than others. When you embrace this mindset, you can appreciate that you CAN have all foods and when you do choose to deviate from your plan you are less prone to binging because you don’t feel deprived.

Learn to eliminate the idea of good or bad foods. Even when you’re losing fat you can still enjoy all sorts of different foods, just be mindful of how frequently and how much.
