My goal as your coach is to take you to a level of “unconscious competence”

I once had a business coach tell me “You are, at this point, consciously incompetent: you know what you are doing wrong, you don’t like the results, but you don’t know how to change it. The good news is you actually know what you are doing wrong – some don’t. My goal as your coach is to take you to a level of “unconscious competence.”

For whatever reason today, I thought about that conversation and it occurred to me, when you strip it down to the bare bones, this is what we do at LBC and our main objective in working with clients. A lot of clients enter their coaching with us either in a state of unconscious incompetence or conscious incompetence. The goal is to take them to a point of unconscious competence and build actual SKILLS which become automatically applied. The goal is to free them from years of failed approaches and a failed mindset.

We want our clients to become stress free, and have the peace of mind in knowing they are following a sustainable and maintainable approach and in a mental and emotional state where it just becomes “automatic”. It’s liberating when it “clicks”.

This takes time, actual coaching, and coaches who, themselves, have an unconsciously competent skill set to help others. A lot of fitness pros can plug in numbers, set some macros, and write a halfway decent workout…and post on Instagram about how wonderful they are and how they did it themselves. Doesn’t qualify them to actually coach ANYONE. That’s not ALL it’s about. It’s about taking people on a journey and up the hierarchy of competence.
