What A Difference A Year Makes!

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Today I’m posting a guest blog from LBC client Anca Saccaro, who wanted to share the stark contrast in her competition prep experience last year, relative to this year, with some photographic ‘proof’ of her progress. Anca is an example of someone who gets results because she works hard and works hard doing the right things and as a result, she’s progressed and looks better than last year. And that’s what it’s all about - making improvements. If you look the same as you did last year (and you’re trying to improve in some aesthetic sense) … chances are you’re doing something wrong.

This next month will mark two years since I started training with the specific purpose of becoming a figure competitor. At 30 years old, 25%+ bodyfat, with little muscle tone and plenty of “jiggle”, not being able to do 10 push-ups from the knees and (gasp) being a runner at heart- entering a competition was a scary decision. But I was tired of being “soft and squishy” and I was ready to do everything it took to change the way my body looked.

After a short lean-out phase, a 6 month bulk and a grueling 5-month “old school” prep with a popular online trainer I stepped on stage in September 2007- 20 lbs lighter, looking lean but flat and depleted, and totally exhausted. I had been doing more than 14 hours of cardio weekly for months, lifting weights for one hour Monday through Saturday and having absolutely no rest days for five months straight. I was not allowed dairy, fruit, potatoes or any added fats. My hair had started to fall out more than usual and I had lost my period three months into the prep.

I managed to avoid the dreaded rebound by slowly backing down my cardio and upping my calories to maintenance levels over the following 10 weeks. I knew I could not go through that kind of prep again and felt that I had spun my wheels the whole year because I had lost quite a bit of the muscle I had worked so hard to build during the bulk. I said to myself “there’s got to be a way to build muscle without adding a ton of fat, and to maintain that muscle by doing a healthy prep!”.

It was at that point that I made the decision to hire Erik.

I was lean enough still so we decided to do a long bulk. I loved the variety and monthly changes in splits, tempos, rest times and I reached quite a few PRs- including being able to do 35 regular push-ups in a row. The diet was a blast! I had fun experimenting with healthy recipes within my allowed macros but I kept it clean with the exception of 1-2 free meals every week.

24 weeks and 13 pounds later, I was ready to start leaning back down. I’m currently four weeks out from the NPC Tournament of Champions in Anaheim, and seven weeks from the San Francisco Figure Championships. Saying that this prep has been fun would be an understatement! I’m doing (a lot!) less cardio now than I did at 16 weeks out last year, I train only three days a week and I love the challenge of the workouts! I’ve been eating cottage cheese, fruit, peanut butter and almonds every day and I get “yummy junk” for my post-workout meals. That includes Oreo Crisps, ice cream sandwiches and bread! Starting this week I will also get a weekly high-carb refeed.

The 13 pounds are gone already and I’m looking forward to getting leaner over these next few weeks. I have a long way to go towards that full, muscular “figure” look but it’s a great goal to work towards! My main goal this year (the only one I could control since this is such a subjective sport when it comes to placings) is to look better than I did last year.

The pictures below were taken at 8 weeks out in July 2007, and at 8 weeks out last month (July 2008). (so the same stage in my prep)

Thanks, Erik!

2008 IFBB North Americans - Jennie Hamilton

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I just received some two-weeks out pictures from from the always positive Jennie Hamilton. This is Jennie’s first crack at a National-level show and it will be her only one this year, due to the fact that as a US resident, yet Canadian citizen, she is only permitted to do one National show per year (outside of the CBBF shows).

Jen has made some great improvements in the last year - probably the most notable improvement in development is in her shoulders - a key muscle to have fully developed when you’re competing. Add to that, the fact that she’s on pace to far surpass her previous best condition.

Here’s some pictures.

We’re in the countdown. Great work Jennie.

And I’ll close off with a little nutritional wisdom from Jen.

Question:
Is it true that the only reason women get into figure competitions is for the after show meals?

Answer:
No. at least not for me. Sure the after show meal is yummy after weeks of dieting. I don’t ever eat fried food or stuff like that anyways even after a show. A good quality steak meal and dessert, and of course my dark chocolate reese pb cups. I think that those who get caught up during prep with FOOD - what they can and cannot have - and put too much focus on that, make it harder for themselves. I actually enjoy everything I eat for my prep, and while the portions aren’t large I’m happy with what I am eating. I don’t suffer from cravings or stuff. I know, call me weird. Nutrition is important to me so I’m not one that goes crazy after the competition is all over and gain a ton. It drives me crazy to see those girls that constantly talk about how torturous their diet is, how they caved in to cravings, etc. Diet IMO, is simply a tool we use to get us into competition condition; it is not the basis of why someone should compete or be the stronghold over prep. The mind needs to be prepared just as much. It’s a problem with not only competitors in general but society today having an addiction problem to food - people have forgotten the purpose of food - nutrition for our bodies. I believe if people would take the constant torturous focus OFF the food they cannot eat or day dreaming of bad stuff, there would be far less stress all around.

I love food. Yes, it’s very enjoyable, offers a sense of satisfaction, creativity in preparation of food, celebrations, etc. I guess the entire point of this ramble (coffee must have kicked in - hahaha) is that no, my focus is not on the food.

NPC Junior Nationals - Jody Bernhardt

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

I’d put up some pics of Noel live from the show, but wasn’t able to get some of Jody’s pictures up. So, I thought I’d post a few of her up so you can see how she looked for the Junior Nationals. I still have to get more pics off my camera … I’ve been lazy. I’ll put up a “candid shots” post soon.

2008 NPC Junior Nationals

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Just a quick one for the moment.

Noel placed 2nd in Class F, narrowly missing out on the win.

First place - 20
Second place (Noel) - 21

And she got straight first place votes across the board in the two-piece suit. Woohoo!

We’re very happy with the weekend’s outcome. Thanks for all the support.

Some Friday Pictures

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Here’s the promised pictures from yesterday. Just some quick posing practice pictures, but you get the idea.

As expected, Noel is much fuller and harder than last night. Nice, round shoulders, veins in the abs, harder legs, etc., etc. Should be a good Round 2. (I haven’t seen Jody yet, but she says she’s looking excellent - off to see for myself).

More later.

2008 NPC Junior Nationals - Round 1

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

So I’m back in my room - it’s 1:45am here (2:45am at home) and needless to say I’m pretty tired. The one-piece prejudging Round 1 went from 5:00pm until 10:00pm … and that’s just when we left. They were just starting the physique rounds of Fitness at that point, but we had to get out of there to get the girls some food.

Huge show, with classes ranging from 16 all the way up to 40-something. They obviously passed on the idea of evening out the class sizes for this show. Must be tough to judge a 40-person class.

Anyway, Jody, doing her first national show was in Class E - 30 girls. She was in the 3rd call out I believe which should put her in the 15th ballpark. So a good first outing given there were 30 girls. As expected awesome presentation; just needs some more size to hang with these girls.

Noel was in Clsss F and looked excellent. She was called out right off the bat in a 4-person call out. Then they filed them off. So, knowing that, she’s got a top 4 placing in the one-piece round. If you recall from Junior USAs, she placed 6th in the one-piece round (and 4th in the two-piece round), so we’re already a couple steps up here and needless to say we’re all happy with how Noel and Jody did so far.

From there we hightailed it to the Outback as the plan was to do a pretty heavy fat load (and lots of salt too) tonight - after Round 1 Friday night and before Round 2 Saturday morning. Basically, focusing on being the tightest for the two-piece round. Noel’s vascularity was already starting to get a bit crazy when I said goodnight.

So, keep your fingers crossed. More tomorrow with some Round 2 updates after the prejudging.

And I’ll get up those few afternoon posing practice shots I took earlier today. Lots of fun candids this weekend as well.

Stay tuned.

Live from the 2008 NPC Junior Nationals

Friday, June 20th, 2008

So we’re about two hours out from the Round 1 prejudging here in Chicago. This place is buzzing with some incredible physiques. A a guy, you can’t really come to a show like this and feel like much more than a swimmer. Lots of people here for this one.

We’re basically just cruising in for the one-piece this evening and then plan to fat load after this round tonight in order to nail it for tomorrow’s two-piece round. So today, we’ve got normal water intake (no cutting), and some clean protein, carbs and fats at each meal leading up to the prejudging. Noel will probably have some PB M&Ms at some point before prejudging as well. Here’s a quick shot of her abs from this morning; excuse the blurriness. The picture didn’t turn out very well, but you get the idea.

Noel Abs

I’ll be back with a few shots taken earlier today as we were just practicing posing … with improvements still to come as the hours pass.

Ultrasounds and the NPC Junior Nationals

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

How’s that for a title eh?

Nothing ‘informative’ here for you today, but I still wanted to post and share something with you.

Yesterday was Laura’s first ultrasound. This had to be one of the neatest experiences I can remember. For those of you parents out there, I’m sure you know the feeling I’m referring to. Wow. It was so cool to see a little baby … with a hugantic melon for a head. I showed the printouts to my mom who without missing a beat said, “looks just like you Erik; big head”.

I didn’t laugh.

Anyway, from head to butt, the baby is only 7cm long - 2.75 inches for you stuck in the stone age. So tiny. She (that being Laura - we’re not finding out the sex) is only 13.5 weeks they said. You could see the little hands and feet, see the heart beating, etc., etc. Really a phenomenal thing to look at.

Wow!

Onto other news, I’m off to the NPC Junior Nationals (leaving at 3am tonight/tomorrow morning), which are again being held in Chicago. We’ll have a smaller contingent at this show but a good one nonetheless. The Junior Nationals is a two-day event with Round 1 Prejudging (one-piece) being done Friday evening, Round 2 prejudging (two-piece) being done Saturday morning and the Finals being done Saturday evening. Two-day events throw a bit of a wrench into the typical strategies used for the traditional one-day shows, but being through this before, I’ve got it all figured out. Tomorrow will just be a ‘hang out’ day of sorts and I’ll do some work as well. I was debating trying to get a workout in down there, but I’m going to pass on that and just take the few days off.

Speaking of my training, today I weighed the lightest I have weighed in literally as long as I can remember - 215.8lbs. I am hoping to be done dieting fairly soon. Still have a little to go. I’ve dropped my training back to four days per week from the six days I was doing. It was interesting to see that pushing six days per week with high volume while dieting didn’t result in any negatives. I was able to push that for 8 straight weeks. In this phase, I’ll take two extra days off, but my training volume is staying on the high side.

Anyway, off to finish getting ready. I’ll try to get in a ‘live update’ from the show again some time on the weekend - with pictures even. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed for the LBC girls.

2008 NPC Junior USAs Recap

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

So the 2008 NPC Junior USAs has come and gone and it was a great show overall. If you’ve read Noel’s blog you already know how she did - a huge improvement over last year’s attempt at the national stage where she did not place in the top 18 in any of her 3 attempts.

This year however, in the first show of the year, she’s looking to be a contender. She placed 6th in her class, narrowly missing out on 5th by one point. Even better is that she placed 4th in the two-piece suit (and 6th in the one piece, netting her the 6th place overall finish). A new overall look, much more polished presentation and 11lbs of new competition muscle since this same show last year seemed to have gotten some attention.

You can find more pictures of Noel and the line up here.

Laura Rose also had a good showing, coming in in her best condition to date (and heaviest as well). She placed 14th in a tough class and Hollie Higdon, who I posted some pictures of in a recent blog came in excellent condition, but unfortunately found herself in a class of 35 women where it’s easy to get lost.

Next up is the NPC Junior Nationals in Chicago.

Overall the weekend was great. I arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday and spent a couple days with Noel and her family. Friday morning Scott, Noel Elizabeth and myself made the 5-hr trip to Charleston … by way of the ’scenic route’. Seemed like it took forever.

After everyone getting settled, I headed off to the gym to get a workout in. Friday night we all went out to the Outback for dinner. We had a group of around 12 people I think. Fun times. The girls were hungry!

Saturday was a full day with the prejudging and finals to attend and then we all headed back to Amy’s and Kevin’s place (where I was staying) for a post-contest eating celebration. Oddly enough, while there was a ton of food, most of us weren’t able to eat much since we’d eaten so much crap already that day.

Sunday was the trek home - IHOP for breakfast, a Dairy Queen blizzard for lunch and Arby’s for dinner. How’s that for good nutrition?

And then on Monday, Noel and I hit the gym twice and filmed about 100 new exercises for the LBC exercise database.

All in all a very successful week away.
